ONAM 2021

Onam is an annual harvest festival celebrated in the southern indian state of kerala.

         Onam is a secular festival, which means it is celebrated by people from all castes and communities, i.e., irrespective of their religion.

     As per the legends, the festival marks the homecoming of Asura King Mahabali, during when Keralites celebrate Onam all over the world. Onam is also a 10-day festival, just like Ganesh Chaturthi, the first and the last days being the most important ones.

   To welcome Asura King Mahabali, people try their hands in making pookalam (flower carpet) designs in front of their homes. Nowadays, pookalam design competitions are also held all over Kerala at schools, colleges, offices etc., during this occasion; this year, people will have to limit their creativity to their homes due to obvious reasons.

   During this occasion, an elaborate lunch meal is prepared in almost every household, known as Sadya. The meal is served on a plantain leaf, and one can expect more than 26 varieties of food to be served. Most of the hotels also serve Sadya during Onam for lunch.
